When Death Strikes the Office
When Death Strikes the Office Death Strikes the Office Right now, my husband is dealing with a difficult situation. His boss was diagnosed with cancer shortly after Thanksgiving, after not feeling well. Last week, the staff got called to the hospital to say good bye, as her family didnât think she would live through the night. When I got home after work that evening, my husband was still visibly upset from the experience of seeing a formerly vibrant, strong leader completely incoherent and transparent as her body was making its last struggles. Not just a boss, this person has also been a great mentor and excellent manager. The staff, including my husband, has a lot of affection, respect, and loyalty for her. Even the president of the company came to the hospital room to pay his respects. Sadly yesterday, my husband got a text message that his supervisor had passed away this weekend. But anyone who has been in the workforce for a longer period of time has undoubtedly suffered an in-office loss. But each time it happens, it still feels like a punch in the gut that takes the legs out from underneath you. Personally, my first experience in death striking the office was when I was in my early 20s⦠a lovely woman who was our office manager and routinely thought of as our nurturing âmother henâ got cancer. Her passing was shocking and marked the first time I dealt with death first-hand. The next one was even more shocking as a co-worker at another office got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer around Christmas time, and was dead within 3 weeks. And the last time it happened, it was a dear friend / co-worker who also got cancer. After bravely fighting it for 6 months, she too passed away. When death strikes the office, it has countless impacts in many different aspects of the office matesâ life. The person is a colleague, and often a friend. They are part of team; their absence is a missing link in that vital framework. The daily workflow is completely disrupted â" tasks that might have flowed through that personâs desk now start backing up in a circuitous eddy. Uncertainty abounds- who is going to take over that personâs tasks? Now what? But grief is an important part of this office process, and needs to happen. It can manifest itself in many ways as most people have different approaches to handling the death. Numbness is common. Itâs not unusual for staff to suffer from a loss of productivity or absenteeism, as they are often distracted with their thoughts. Then there are the weird things that need to be done. Who gets the disturbing task of having to go through the co-workerâs personal effects and office/desk? But there are ways to cope. Organizing a memorial service can help provide closure and enable co-workers to share fond memories of the person. Another thing that can be done is to set up a memorial at work- some kind of remembrance for the person including a donation in their name to charity, tree planting, or some other way to keep the memory of that person alive. Reaching out to the deceasedâs family with cards or flowers can also extend everyone in the officeâs condolences. Finally, larger offices often have Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) which include counseling coverage, to help office workers process their feelings about the death. The pain of the loss, like any death, is something that needs to be worked out individually, but by comforting each other and sharing feelings, this can help co-workers get through what is undoubtedly one of the most stressful times anyone could experience.

The more I think of this, whats worked for me in terms of reaching goals, the more I agree. Laura at More in You warns you of The Dreaded Either/Or. Are you seeing things in black white? Or are you picking bleu mangoes? Last night I saw a live version of This American Life, but in a movie theater. Dont ask. Or do, and find the answer here. Anyway, while Ive done my best to listen to the podcasts, I usually fail I cant pay attention to a story on the radio in my house, and the subway noise is too damn loud to listen on my ipod when Im commuting. Gawker Media Writers Publicly Debate How Theyll Vote About Unionization
Gawker Media Writers Publicly Debate How They'll Vote About Unionization Last month, some editorial members of Gawker Media, owner of various web properties including Deadspin, Jezebel, Gizmodo, and of course, Gawker.com, announced they planned to form a union. Now, with an election scheduled for next week that will decide whether the company will unionize, Gawker writers have made their votes and opinions on the plan public in a post published Thursday. The discussion offers a rare look at how wrenching labor organization can be. Some pro-union writers have been so turned off by the process that theyâve decided to cast their ballot against unionization efforts. âI am an avid proponent of unions, a leftist, and am perpetually distrustful of those in powerâ"especially those that hold sway over my own employment,â writes Deadspin staff member Kevin Draper. âYet on June 3rd, I am going to vote against Gawker Media editorial staffers unionizing. That is how fâ" up this entire process, from start to apparent finish, has been.â Draper goes on to list a set of grievances that turned him against unionization, including a perceived lack of communication and transparency from union supporters and an election the writer feels was scheduled too soon. Those issues are echoed by a number of other staffers, including Deadspin columnist Drew Magary, who added that the push toward organization had turned many staffers against one another (âThis has created a GALACTIC amount of acrimony within Gawkerâ). Magary also voiced concerns about the everyday implications of unionization (âI f***ing hate meetings.â). Stef Schrader, an editor for Jalopnik, questioned whether a raise that would include union dues could force the company to cut into other benefits. âI donât agree that we need to pay an outside entity to negotiate these things for us,â posted Schrader. Most staff commenters appear to support unionization. âI am voting yes on the union,â wrote Hamilton Nolan, Gawkerâs longest-tenured writer and a major force behind the drive to organize. âThis has been a truly âgrass rootsâ organizing process in the sense that weâve been making it all up as we go along. Thereâs no doubt all the communication efforts have not been perfect. But I really, really hope that everyone will think about the big picture: a vote for this union is a vote for unity. Itâs a vote to meld all of our interests together as one. And beyond the practical benefits for us, itâs a really important symbolic vote for our entire industry. Itâs the first step of a movement that could end up helping a lot of people.â If the pushback against organization by some writers comes as a surprise, it shouldnât. Online media companies, despite being populated by many young city-dwellers who, as a demographic, tend to skew towards the left, have generally been reluctant to unionize. If Gawker does become a union shop, it would be the first major new media company to do so. Why is the digital press so reluctant to band together? As the Washington Post explained in January, a combination of generational and economic forces tend to make unionization less palatable to online scribes. Younger workers are typically less familiar with unions and more apt to see themselves as personal brands instead of as part of a collective. Another reason for web mediaâs union-phobia may just be that many journalists donât feel they have it quite so hard. âThey tend to think that because of their education and their talent, they donât need [a union],â said Freddy Kunkle, the co-chair of The Washington Postâs Guild unit, in an interview with the Post. âWhat theyâre doing is not coal mining: Itâs not dangerous; itâs not dirty. What are they going to get out of it?â

What To Do When You Feel Like A Failure
What To Do When You Feel Like A Failure Success cannot exist without failure. At least thats what people tell me that failure is a crucial part of success and that it is the necessary work you do that helps you grow. That your response to failure is a true judge of character that its not how you fall, but how you get back up that matters.I fully believe this to be true about other people but its much harder to apply that love and compassion to myself. Whether its imposter syndrome, a feeling of inadequacy or a negative thought, perceived failure or actual failure, Im left feeling an onslaught of shame and guilt and embarrassment. Unwanted thoughts filter through my head Do people think Im a failure at work? At life? I know I shouldnt care what others think, but I do. I struggle with accepting my own imperfection, with accepting that it is inevitable that I am going to fail because Im human. The negative feelings are pervasive and it is hard to successfully redirect them. So, how do y ou get back up? What can you do if you feel like a failure particularly if it escalates to depression? 1.Get Perspective from Other PeopleReach out to people you trust. Failure is part of the human experience and weve all been there, so its likely you have someone in your life who has been through something similar. Depending on the situation I talk to my partner, friends, coworkers, family, or ratgebers. If its work-related, I particularly rely on a mentor to get some perspective on how shes dealt with imposter syndrome or a feeling of inadequacy at work. My mentors help in a lot of ways but mainly they normalize what Im feeling and they usually have some sage advice on how to successfully get past the failure.I once made the mistake of staying too long in a job where I constantly felt like I could never do anything right. And the truth is, I screwed up and I got into a self-sabotaging pattern.I made the decision to quit and when I told my mentor she not only validated my decision but pointed out the ways in which I grew from the experience and even reframed some of my failure as a success. She was honest with me - there were definitely ways I messed up but it was ok and she helped me figure out a way forward. The point is find someone to talk to. Things usually arent as badeanstalt in reality as youve made them out to be in your head. And even if they are, sharing with someone you trust can bring clarity.2. Journal about Your ThoughtsSometimes talking to someone else isnt immediately an option. And if youre anything like me, you might process things internally first before opening up to others. The best way for me to process to get everything out is through journaling.Pro tip journal in a stream of consciousness style. Try not to judge yourself just write what comes in to your head as it comes into your head. Dont worry about spelling or grammar. I recommend writing by putting pen to paper, but if you prefer to type thats great too. When youre done crumple u p the pages and throw them away (or delete the word file). Literally let go of those negative, complicated thoughts. Or save them to reread later to get some perspective and insight.Try not to journal for an audience. I used to do this Id write as if people were going to happen upon my journal one day and be so impressed with my intelligence and wit, so touched by my poignant phrasing, that they would have to publish it. The other bad part of journaling for audience? I used to write carefully, worried that if someone I loved and cared about read my journal, I would hurt their feelings. All writing for others really accomplished was make me overthink what I put on the page, writing and re-writing entries, thus negating any catharsis. Your journal is for you and you only - so write for you. 3. Own Your FeelingsOne super helpful thing I tend to do when Im feeling like a failure is I get angry at myself for feeling the way I do. I basically take a crappy situation and then, by being my o wn worst critic, I compound and deepen the negativity. Or I use sarcasm to negate my feelings (see this the first sentence of this paragraph). As much as you can, try to stop your feeling of failure from spiraling instead, right after you admit to yourself or someone else what youre feeling, own it. Does it suck? Yes. Are you miserable? Probably. Is your life over? I promise you its not.You feel like a failure and the world is not going to end. Tell yourself its going to be ok. Because it is.4. Do Something Small That Makes You Feel JoyHave you ever had a really bad day and then on your way home, on the train or in line at the grocery store, you saw the worlds cutest baby laughing and smiling and you couldnt help but laugh and smile too? Do you remember how thatsmall moment allowed you to breathe a bit easier, take yourself out of your despair, and relax? Ah, the little things in life.If youre feeling like a failure try to create or recreate those little joyful moments for yourself. Do something small that brings a smile to your face or makes you laugh or helps you relax - especially if youre like me and have somehow convinced yourself that you dont deserve happiness.Listen to your favorite podcast (or a new one), download some new music, eat some chocolate, take a bath, light a candle, buy yourself some flowers, watch a movie, go for a walk, give someone a hug, watch your favorite show, take a nap, read a new book, re-read an old book, dance around your house, sing loudly and out of tune. Or close your eyes and just breathe.5. Stop Comparing Yourself to Other PeopleWhen Im feeling badly about myself, I convince myself that everyone elses life is perfect and there is clearly something wrong with me. I start to look for confirmation and one of the quickest and easiest ways to accomplish this is by going down a rabbit hole on social media, taking a journey into the carefully curated facebook inc posts of acquaintances. But its not real life - its the product of an Instagram filter. And while I also find myself portraying life in a soft sepia glow from time to time, it doesnt do me (or you) any good to make comparisons. This goes the other way, too - looking at other peoples lives from a place of judgment instead of envy. You know what Im talking about - from that well, at least Im not (insert snarky negative comment here) place. I get it. Its a totally normal impulse in which I, too, indulge. But trust me, the short-term relief usually melts away into a deeper feeling of shame and failure. Comparing myself to others only adds to my pain while delaying the confrontation of whatever truth I need to face. It just makes everything worse.6. Unplug from DistractionsYou know what else helps with resisting the urge to compare yourself to others? Disconnecting. Its neither a secret nor is it a profound realization that we are inundated with a lot of information. Feeling like a failure is overwhelming enough. Why add to it?Give yourself a break from th e constant noise. Try giving yourself some respite by turning off your computer and putting away your phone for a few hours or (gasp) a day. Delete social media apps from your phone. If that gives you heart palpitations, at least try turning off notifications.7.Get MovingI know what youre thinking I should just leave you alone and let you stay in bed all day hiding from the world.I hear you. Exercising is the belastung thing I feel like doing when Im down. For one, I always feel like Im doing it wrong. Also, how is it that I walk up the same flight of subway stairs every single day of my life and Im still out of breath? Does that ever go away? Will I always be lightly sweating no matter what I do?That being said, getting your blood pumping really does go a long way in helping to clear your head. Now, Im not saying that if youre feeling like a failure you need to start training for a marathon or something. Taking that big of a step might actually make things worse (if youre like me).I m a fan of baby steps. Take the stairs at work instead of the elevator. Pick up the food you ordered instead of having it delivered. If youre meeting up with friends, maybe suggest going for a walk together. Do a cannonball into a pool. Make a snow angel. Most of all, enjoy the rush of endorphins and the clarity they bring.--Jennifer Koza is a social worker who believes support and empowerment are key to life and has the data to back it up.
